Stroppo
The medieval capital of the Valley
At an altitude of 1087 metres, and thanks to its central position in the valley, Stroppo played a primary role in the political and social economy of the area in past centuries. From the 13th century, it became the capital of the Confederation of the twelve municipalities of the upper Maira valley, a role that was never formally recognised. Here, however, one could find the main services, such as inns with stables, workshops and mills. A hospital was also opened in 1463, which became a lazaret hospital during plague epidemics.
Today in Stroppo there is still a middle school with a boarding school for the upper and middle valley. In recent years, the architectural renovation of the picturesque villages has made them a destination for tourism that is attentive to sustainability and nature.
