Roccabruna

Discovering the cup marks

Roccabruna

Roccabruna has almost 100 hamlets and villages, some of which are uninhabited. They are scattered from the plateau at an altitude of 700 m to the slopes of Mount Roccerè, and the bastions of Rocca Cubiera and Rocca Bruna. On this dark-coloured cliff stood the castle between the 13th and 16th centuries, of which only a few ruins remain today.

Inhabited since prehistoric times by Celto-Ligurian populations, it is rich in archaeological finds and is home to the archaeological area of Monte Roccerè. At this important site of rock archaeology, you can admire more than 20,000 ancient cup-marks carved into the rock, dating back to the Bronze Age. A testimony to the first human settlements in the Maira Valley, and to the history of man, which attracts tourists and scholars from all over the world every year.
