Maraman – Cultural landscape of the Occitan valleys

Maraman – Cultural landscape of the Occitan valleys

The events of the Maraman network, which unites 32 museum and exhibition facilities in the Maira, Grana, and Stura Valleys, continue throughout October.

The first appointment is Friday, October 16 at 9:00 PM at the Macra Town Hall in Piazza Marconi 1, where the Punto Visita Bottai presents Dimenticata. Genesi e oblio della Strada dei Cannoni in Val Maira (Forgotten: Genesis and Oblivion of the Strada dei Cannoni in Maira Valley), a presentation of the research and degree thesis by Pietro Tarozzo. Contrary to what we are accustomed to considering today, in the past, mountain territories were not isolated, but rather traversed by a dense network of paths and mule tracks that connected the high valleys more effectively than the valley floor roads. This was a slow, almost invisible yet capillary infrastructure that for centuries made possible communications, trade, and above all, cultural cross-pollination between the valleys of Piedmont and those across the Alps. These were also strategic routes, used as invasion paths or for the deployment of troops and military equipment. Among these, the so-called ‘Strada dei Cannoni’, built in the Maira Valley in 1744 during the War of the Austrian Succession, must certainly be included.

On Friday, October 30 at 6:00 PM, the Kinomuseo – Cinema Museum and the Exhibition of miniature artistic works, exhibition entities of Valgrana, present Lou cours di mort. Tradizioni e credenze della Halloween occitana (Traditions and beliefs of the Occitan Halloween) in the Municipal Hall of Valgrana at Via Roma 44, exploring the time when grandparents and great-grandparents practiced “trick or treat”. Starting from Le manoir du diable, an 1896 film (4 minutes) considered the progenitor of all horror sagas in the world, Rosella Pellerino, Scientific Director of Espaci Occitan, will accompany young and old enthusiasts of local festivals and traditions on a discovery of the European origins of a holiday that has recently returned to prominence through American culture, but which was already widespread centuries ago, in different forms, even in Piedmont. For the occasion, on that day at 11:00 AM, it will be possible to visit the Exhibition of miniature artistic works in Via Galimberti 46 for free, and at 4:30 PM the Kinomuseo in Via Roma 17.

All events are free of charge with open admission: the festival will continue throughout the autumn and winter in the Maira, Grana, and Stura valleys.
