Spectacular cycling route that runs almost entirely along the ridge between Val Varaita and Val Maira, offering exceptional views of the Cottian Alps mountains.

The first 14 km take place mainly through the woods, along a steady and never excessively challenging climb. The tree cover makes this section particularly pleasant even on the hottest days. At Colle della Ciabra, the view opens onto the peaks of lower Val Maira and the road continues for approximately 8 km on almost flat terrain.

From Birrone, the route climbs again on the Val Varaita side, always accompanied by the coolness of the woods and wide views of the surrounding mountains. At Colle Rusciera, at an altitude of 2,000 meters, you return to the Val Maira side: from here the panorama becomes magnificent, with Monte Matto and the Argentera massif to the south and Pelvo d’Elva, Marchisa and Chersogno dominating the horizon to the west.

The route then continues with moderate gradients to Colle di Sampeyre, a magnificent panoramic viewpoint from which, on the clearest days, the view ranges from Monte Rosa to the Ligurian Alps. The final 6 km lead to Colle della Bicocca, at the foot of Pelvo d’Elva. The return follows the same route.

Notes

• The section between Pian Pietro and Colle della Ciabra is always open to vehicular traffic. In other sections, vehicle circulation is regulated and on certain days the road is reserved exclusively for cyclists and pedestrians.
• For those wishing to shorten the route, it is possible to reach both Colle del Birrone and Colle di Sampeyre by car, accessible from both valleys.
