Gruppo Provenzale-Castello loop
Itinerary to discover the Provenzale/Castello group, a mountainous complex that stands imposing behind Chiappera.
Leave the car after the village of Chiappera (1614 m), after the second hairpin bend to the right of the crossroads. Start by taking the path towards Colle Greguri, a pass that is clearly visible to the naked eye from the start.
Right from the start, Rocca Provenzale will be the companion of this hike; tradition has it that the first person to climb it was a parish priest in the mid-19th century, to fulfil a vow. His name was Father Provenzale, he was originally from Chiappera and he promised to erect a cross on the mountain that today bears his name.
A steady climb takes you up to the Greguri pass, where it is not difficult to meet curious ibexes who greet hikers.
In front are the Rocca and the Torre Castello, two mountains that, together with the Provenzale, constitute a paradise for mountaineers: historic routes follow one another and flank each other; climbers “dance” in harmony on the vertical walls.
Next, descend through a wide, green valley to Grange Collet, from where an old military road leads back to the car park.
