NATURE AND CULTURE WALK DISCOVERING THE HAMLETS OF ALBARETTO MACRA
A new appointment with the nature and culture walks to discover the hamlets and territory of the Municipality of Macra, particularly the Albaretto Macra area.
This initiative is part of the series of events planned for the B.R.I.C.A. Project: Resilient Villages of Cultural and Environmental Innovation, implemented by the Municipalities of Celle di Macra and Macra in collaboration with the Ecomuseo dell’Alta Valle Maira, and funded by the PNRR – under the Borghi Grant_ Intervention Line B (M1C3. Measure 2. Investment 2.1).
The guided walk will allow you to discover the distinctive features of the territory and hamlets of Albaretto Macra, once an independent municipality with its unique natural, environmental, architectural, artistic, and cultural characteristics.
The walk follows the Serremorello, Garini, Cucchietti, Coletto loop, returning to Serremorello, covering approximately 4 km with an elevation gain of 150 m.
The walk starts from Borgata Serremorello, once the capital of the Municipality of Albaretto Macra, an autonomous municipality since 1602 that was merged with Macra in 1928, home to many families dedicated to the cooper’s trade.
In the hamlet you can admire the former Town Hall that houses the Coopers Visitor Center, the Chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows, the former Rectory with bell gable, the new church built in the second half of the 20th century, beautifully restored mountain houses, and the communal oven.
From here you descend toward the Parish Church of Maria Assunta, of medieval origin, perched on a cliff that features an external portal with carved sculptural elements, a portico with columns, and a beautiful stone bell tower.
Next to the church, in its original location, is the small cemetery of Albaretto still with its original layout, from which you can observe the 1722 sundial placed on one of the church walls.
Follow the path to Borgata Garini, which still maintains its medieval layout, with covered passages, megalithic portals and lintels, and features some dwellings with round columns and balconies with interesting larch railings.
In the hamlet you can also admire a house with a painting by Giors Boneto and the Chapel of Madonna delle Grazie with a facade frescoed by Gauteri.
Climb along the mule track to reach Borgata Cucchietti, characterized by a series of houses built between 1600-1700 arranged in a row along the path, with the communal oven, and continue to Borgata Colletto.
At Borgata Colletto, the highest among the permanent settlements of Albaretto, you will find the Chapel of Sant’Anna and a series of water cisterns, as the area had scarce water resources.
The loop closes with the return to Serremorello.
The walk is organized in collaboration with the Vocational Training Agency of Dronero.
Meeting point at Albaretto Macra, in Borgata Serremorello, in the square in front of the Coopers Visitor Center (former town hall).
Departure at 2:30 PM and arrival at 5:30 PM.
Sportswear is recommended.
