NATURAL AND CULTURAL WALK TO DISCOVER THE HAMLETS OF MACRA

NATURAL AND CULTURAL WALK TO DISCOVER THE HAMLETS OF MACRA

A new event featuring natural and cultural walks to discover the hamlets and territory of the Municipality of Macra, particularly the Alma area.

This guided walk will allow you to discover the unique features of the territory and its hamlets, with a focus on the natural, environmental, architectural, artistic, and cultural characteristics of the area stretching from the Chapel of San Salvatore to the hamlet of Camoglieres, along a section of the Sentiero dei Ciclamini.

The route begins at the Chapel of San Salvatore, the oldest place of worship in the mid-upper Maira Valley, founded by the monks of Oulx between 1120 and 1242.

Here, visitors can admire the façade and the bell-gable, as well as the cycle of medieval frescoes inside, whose depicted scenes are a unique example in the Province of Cuneo.

The path ascends along the mule track that joins the Sentiero dei Ciclamini; from there, it continues through a landscape characterized by terraces that were used for vineyards until a few decades ago, eventually reaching the hamlet of Camoglieres, which is divided into two districts: Sottana and Soprana.

Thanks to its sunny location, the Camoglieres basin was once rich in cereal and fruit tree crops; hemp was also grown here, harvested, retted in pools, and prepared for weaving.

Some hemp retting pools are still partially visible, and an interesting “kneeling” wash-house can still be found on the outskirts of the village.

Camoglieres is one of the best-preserved Alpine villages in the mid-Maira Valley, featuring medieval buildings, houses with circular columns, underpasses, and lancet windows.

In the village, you can admire the Chapel dedicated to Saints Sebastian and Chiaffredo with its bell-gable, as well as the communal oven with a double baking chamber, which is still functional today.

Additionally, several paintings can be seen, including Saint Christopher the Ferryman with the Christ Child, the Madonna and Child, and the Crucifixion by Giors Boneto, a folk painter from Paesana born in 1746, who worked between the late 18th and early 19th centuries in various valleys of the Cuneo area.

The walk concludes with a return to San Salvatore.

The walk is organized in collaboration with the Vocational Training Agency of Dronero.

This initiative is part of the series of events planned for the B.R.I.C.A. Project: Resilient Villages of Cultural and Environmental Innovation, implemented by the Municipalities of Celle di Macra and Macra in collaboration with the Ecomuseo dell’Alta Valle Maira, and funded by the PNRR – under the Borghi Grant_ Intervention Line B (M1C3.
