Trip to Rifugio Carmagnola
An ideal route for those seeking a scenic, uncrowded climb immersed in the most authentic nature of the Cuneo mountains.
Departure from Acceglio, in the heart of Valle Maira. The first 2 km follow the provincial road, with a relaxed ride that allows you to warm up your legs before taking the right turn leading into the picturesque Vallone del Rio Mollasco.
From here the route completely changes atmosphere: the climb continues initially on asphalt and subsequently on mixed surface between damaged asphalt and gravel road, always rideable and never too demanding. The Rio Mollasco accompanies the route almost constantly, offering an authentic alpine environment, still uncrowded and far from the valley’s more popular routes.
Upon reaching the small church of Madonna delle Grazie, the panorama suddenly opens onto a magnificent landscape, surrounded by numerous peaks over 3,000 meters in the Cottian Alps. From this point the surface becomes slightly rougher, but remains perfectly manageable by MTB and e-bike. The climb maintains a regular and never excessive gradient, with some central sections almost flat that allow you to fully enjoy the landscape and the silence of the valley.
The final kilometers lead to Bivacco Carmagnola, an exceptional panoramic point suspended between Valle Maira and Val Varaita. Here the view becomes simply spectacular: Monviso dominates the horizon together with the main peaks of the Cottian Alps, in an immense and breathtaking vista that amply rewards the climb.
The descent follows the same route as the ascent, fast and enjoyable, alternating flowing sections with more technical but always accessible ones. The return allows you to enjoy once again the splendid panoramas of Vallone del Rio Mollasco and to appreciate from a different perspective this little-known corner of Valle Maira.
