Prevention at high altitudes
A free blood pressure check while hiking
The Hypertension Days in mountain huts are back, a project promoted by the central medical commission of the Italian Alpine Club (CAI), chaired by Paolo Sossai, to bring prevention and health culture to popular mountain locations.
The initiative offers hikers, mountain enthusiasts, and visitors the opportunity to have their blood pressure measured for free, anonymously, confidentially, and non-invasively, within the participating CAI mountain huts during the months of July and August.
Doctors, CAI volunteers, and members of the Central Medical Commission will be available to those who wish to undergo the test.
The mountains as a place for prevention
The project is part of the activities of the CAI Central Medical Commission, which performs an educational, informative, and updating role on medical issues related to the mountains, including through the collection of data and surveys on medical problems connected to visiting high altitudes and the Italian mountains.
The data collected, always in anonymous and aggregated form, will subsequently be processed by the Commission as part of a study dedicated to hypertension in the mountains and, more generally, to the relationship between visiting high lands, prevention, and cardiovascular health.
Words from President Sossai
“With this initiative, we want to bring prevention closer to the places where people experience the mountains,” explained Professor Paolo Sossai, President of the Medical Commission, in a press release.
“Measuring blood pressure in mountain huts is a simple gesture, but it can contribute to increasing awareness of one’s health status and, at the same time, provide useful elements for medical research in mountain environments. The mountains are a place of well-being, but they must be visited with care, knowledge, and responsibility,” Sossai added.
