MARKKU MÄKINEN – organ

Organist and harpsichordist, born in 1973, he is a versatile musician who performs regularly in Finland and other European countries as a soloist and chamber musician. He has collaborated with many internationally renowned musicians and singers and has performed with Finnish and Italian chamber ensembles.

His extensive repertoire ranges from early music to contemporary composers. Over the years, his interest has focused on the life and works of Jehan Alain, on Mediterranean music and particularly Italian music, on late Romantic composers in the wake of Max Reger (such as Sigfrid Karg-Elert and Karl Hoyer), the cosmopolitan Baroque figure of Georg Muffat, and obviously on the cornerstone of Western music, Johann Sebastian Bach.

In his concerts, he often presents forgotten compositions by Finnish authors from the 18th to the 20th century, an idea that has led him to make recordings for the Finnish Broadcasting Company (YLE) and other labels such as Alba and La Bottega Discantica. He also holds masterclasses and specialization courses in Finland and abroad.

He earned his Master’s degree as a solo musician at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, under the guidance of Olli Porthan. He also studied harpsichord with Kati Hämäläinen, graduating in 2001. From 1998 to 2000, he studied at the Royal Conservatory of Amsterdam under the guidance of Jacques van Oortmerssen, where he also obtained a “cum laude” diploma as a solo organ concert performer.

In 1997, he was awarded third prize at the Schnitger international organ competition in Alkmaar (Netherlands), and in 2002, he won first prize at the international competition in Kotka (Finland). From 2002 to 2004, he served at the Organum Society (the oldest in all of Scandinavia) and was the artistic director of the Summer Academy of Church Music in Estonia from 2007 to 2016.

Since 2002, he has been an organ teacher at the Sibelius Academy and is the organist at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Helsinki.

UBALDO ROSSO – flute

He graduated from the Conservatory of Genoa under the guidance of Glauco Cambursano. He later held the position of principal flute in the “I Pomeriggi Musicali” orchestra in Milan and has also collaborated with “Teatro alla Scala” in Milan, the RAI Orchestra in Turin, and the RTSI Orchestra in Lugano. He has dedicated great attention to the research and study of early music on period instruments, participating in courses and seminars throughout Europe, and especially following the lessons of B. Kuijken in Bremen, S. Preston in Clisson, and O. Peter at the Schola Cantorum in Basel. He was the winner of a British Council scholarship, through which he obtained a Diploma of Merit at the “Guildhall School of Music in London” with S. Preston. For years a guest of important national and international institutions and festivals, he has performed in concert in Italy and throughout Europe, as well as in the USA, Mexico, Canada, and Malaysia. In addition to the four CDs with the Classico Terzetto Italiano, he has recorded W.A. Mozart’s flute concertos and sonatinas and the six Sonatas Op. 91 by Bodin de Boismortier; with the Ensemble Astrée, several CDs dedicated to Felice Giardini, Tomaso Giordani, and the Chamber Concertos of Antonio Vivaldi. He was the chair of Flute at State Conservatories for over 40 years.

Organi Vespera 2026

The Organi vespera concert series has for years welcomed some of the most renowned organists on the European scene, while involving this instrument in musical programs characterized by the variety of repertoire and ensembles.

The organ is thus included, for example, in a reading dedicated to the fascination of the sacred literature of Saint Augustine curated in collaboration with actress Elena Zegna; paired in duo with the voice of contralto Vincenzo Franchini, the trumpet of Mauro Pavese, the percussion of Luigi Morleo or the saxophone of Christian Summa; combined in trio with clarinetists Nicola and Raffaele Bertolini; or involved in quartet together with flutist Ubaldo Rosso, violist Vera Anfossi, cellist Milena Punzi.

A series of combinations ready to enhance this instrument, through the interpretation of an extraordinarily rich and varied repertoire, naturally accompanied by recitals for solo organ, curated by Masters of this instrument such as Markku Mäkinen, Bartolomeo Gallizio, Zeno Bianchin.

A concert series that travels through genres and styles, Organi vespera will as usual benefit from the collaboration between the Association and the Vegezzi Bossi Company of Centallo, involving various historic organs in the province and including three events in which the organ of the Church of the Sacred Heart in Cuneo, a jewel of the Vegezzi Bossi heritage, will be played.
