Carlin Path

Carlin Path

The Carlin Path, created in memory of Carlo Rivetti—a great mountain lover who passed away on Mount Oronaye on 2015-08-20—will lead you through an environment of remarkable variety and significant natural value in the Maira Valley.

It is a circular trail with two possible starting points (Viviere and Sorgenti del Maira) that are almost equidistant from each other, whether traveling clockwise or counter-clockwise.
If starting above Viviere, at the fork in the road (where the right path leads to Colle di Ciarbonet), proceed left toward the Gardetta Pass. After a short distance, you will encounter the path leading to the Valmaggia bivouac and the “Ferrata degli Alpini” on Mount Oronaye. After about 20 meters, there is an open space on the left with a boulder featuring a plaque in memory of Carlin. Continue through a cool larch forest until you reach the meadows of Grange Gorra. Follow path S9, which passes in front of the Valmaggia bivouac and climbs to Colle dell’Enchiausa.
After the pass, descend for a long stretch over a scree slope, with the Mount Oronaye massif and its Dolomite-like spires on your left. Pass by Lake Apsoi and the Bonelli bivouac, continuing toward Lake Visaisa. Descend on path S13 to Sorgenti del Maira (the second possible access point). From here, cross the bridge over the Maira River and begin climbing through a beautiful, cool pine forest on path S29, which leads to Colle di Ciarbonet (2,205 meters). From here, descend along the road or the paths that lead back to Viviere.

N.B. No water is available at Colle Ciarbonet; however, it can be found near the Valmaggia bivouac. Particular attention should be paid to respecting the flora and fauna: please remember that we are guests.
