Anchovy fair

In the past, the inhabitants of the alpine valleys were forced to seek work far from home in winter. They were emigrants who left at the end of summer work to go and sell anchovies and preserved fish on the plains. They were the anchovy sellers of the Maira Valley. They would buy fish in Liguria and travel all over Piedmont pushing their caruss loaded with salted fish trying to sell them. It was humble and hard work but many managed to make their fortunes. In the post-World War II period these figures began to disappear, some began to do this work permanently, without a cart but with motorized vehicles. Gradually the ancient anchovy makers disappeared.
The Anchovy Fair recalls this past and offers a food and wine itinerary and the rediscovery of ancient traditions related to the consumption of anchovies… and the products of the valleys.
